IOW-ARCH 2020

The inaugural IOW-ARCH conference was hosted by the Centre for Islamic Archaeology, Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th January 2020.

We welcomed nearly 70 delegates from various countries including, France, Switzerland, USA, Sweden, Germany, Bahrain, China, Japan, Malaysia, and of course, the UK.

A very varied and interesting programme of papers was presented ranging from new archaeological investigations through maritime archaeology, ceramics, manuscripts and epigraphy, and regional sessions on the Red Sea and East African coast.

To coincide with the conference, an exhibition by Hannah Parsons-Morgan - An Introduction to Chinese Ceramics in East Africa: Consumption, Display and Modification from the 8th century to Today, was launched in the IAIS Street Gallery during the drinks reception on the 10th.

We were privileged to have an academic committee made up of Annabel Teh Gallop, Mark Horton, Timothy Insoll, Derek Kennet, Elizabeth Lambourn, Stephanie Wynne-Jones and Ran Zhang, with Hannah Parsons-Morgan taking up the role as Conference Administrator, all of whom will be in the same roles in 2022.

We hope to welcome back familiar faces and make new acquaintances for the second installment taking place on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th of December 2022, whether you will be joining us in person or online via Zoom.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made the 2020 IOW-Arch conference so enjoyable.
